Kai's 1st Day of Kindergarten

Today, Kai embarked on a new chapter in his life and ours -- grade school. The approaching day was not something that was to be mentioned in our house. Kai has been incredibly anxious about the whole thing. In fact, we didn't even talk about it last night. At all.

In preparation for the big day, we checked out a bunch of books from the library; yes, we did this even though we were not supposed to talk about Kai going to school. Somehow, it didn't matter to him when various and a sundry animals and children went to school for the first time. His favorite story by far was "The Kissing Hand" by Audrey Penn. In honor of this book, I made Kai a friendship bracelet to wear to school that day so that he could look at it and feel like I was there with him.

Lucky for us, we only live about two blocks away from Kai's grade school so we were able to walk together as a family that first day.

The hardest part for both Kai and for us was not being able to walk him into the building; it's school policy to not allow parents into classrooms, especially Kindergarten classrooms, until October.

We ALL survived today. It was VERY lonely at home without him though!
