The Beach, Baby!

It all started 30 years ago when my husband's uncle and two of his buddies who had moved away decided to spend a week together at the beach. Now, every year, we still make the 17 + hour trip to Oak Island, NC with kids in tow. We had a great week this year. The kids really enjoyed their morning sojourn in the sand and surf playing with their cousins, aunts, uncles, grandpa and friends! Norah was our little beach baby this year. She LOVED (and I cannot stress this word enough) to let the waves crash into her little body. Kai was a bit more cautious about the water, but by the end of the week he was putting his toes into the water.

It was a blast watching the cousins pretend to surf on the shore, while Benjamin actually did do some body surfing; he's the oldest cousin at 7 years. They had a great time with Mac and Kit building a fortress to keep out the waves during high tide. It was fun to watch the brothers try to build it up before the waves could invade. The kids loved it, and this is actually what got Kai feeling safe enough to dip his toes into the water.

Kai also built some wickedly cool sand sculptures. Boy, can he put together cool little collections. His artistic sense wows both Kit and I. Norah enjoyed her multitude of hand-me-down bathing suits and wearing her sunglasses. In fact, she loved the beach so much she still asks every once in a while to go there. Ah...the beach...we'll see you next time (as our kids always say to any person, place or thing they are leaving)!
